It was indeed a wonderful moment for me to address the gathering of Party functionaries, youths and the local gentry of West District at ‘Football Tournament-cum-Mass Umbrella Mela, 2018’, held today at Kyongsa Ground, Geyzing.
The function was organized by the SDF Party, West District Committee to encourage young football players of the District. I was extremely pleased to know that over 6000 players, right from the ward level participated in this tournament that commenced from 1st June, 2018. The Party functionaries of West District have done a praiseworthy job. I called upon the Party workers to hold this function annually. I also urged the other District cadres to organize similar functions in order to encourage our budding talents in football.
I highlighted on the importance of sports in our lives, both for our physical and mental benefits. In today’s world, sports has also become a medium to link societies and countries together. In the on-going FIFA World Cup, we can see how people are being connected mentally and emotionally while they cheer for the teams of their choice. Among other numerous benefits, sports can be a lucrative profession. I urged the youths to take up sports like badminton, volleyball, archery, football etc. Sportspersons of our State should work towards creating a unique identity of their own and bring recognition to the State. They should be like brand ambassadors for the State.
I informed that the State Government has provided 5% reservation in Government jobs for sportspersons. Furthermore, 2% reservation has also been provided for dancers, singers and artistes. I called upon the youths, Panchayats and the MLAs to spread awareness regarding these reservations so that our children from villages can avail this opportunity.
I shared that the State Government has taken many initiatives to provide welfare measures to the people. The Government takes pride in being successful in fulfilling the basic minimum needs of the people, which is nowhere to be found in the Country. Also, education has been made free right from pre-primary to college level. I informed the gathering on the number of developmental activities being taken up by the Government in West District. Demands for new roads in all the constituencies of the District have been taken up. In fact, 35 km of road has been sanctioned for every constituency of the State, with over Rs. 1,000 crore likely to be spent on the works that would start from the month of August.
I spelt out the developmental works being carried out in the District. Amongst others, a huge community hall and a ropeway are being constructed in Geyzing. Besides, Statue of Unity at Rinchenpong, Statue of Three Lamas at Yuksom, Ethnic Cultural Centre at Buriakhop are other ambitious tourism projects on the anvil. On completion of these projects, West District itself is sure to become one of the premier tourist destinations of the Country.
I made the following announcements:-
1. Football Academy to be established in West District next year.
2. Fund for construction of stadium and completion of Kyongsa Ground to be allocated in the Supplementary Demands for Grants .
3. Playground for football, volleyball courts and badminton courts to be constructed at all GPU levels.
4. All registered ‘A’ and ‘B’ institutes/academy related to music, dance and literature to be provided with annual grants of Rs. 5 lakhs and 3 lakhs respectively.
5. Construction of pedestrian footpath from Geyzing bazaar to Kyongsa Girls’s Senior Secondary School.
Later, I witnessed the final match of the West District Football Tournament.
