Women’s Rights & Respect for Women

  1. 30 % reservation for women in State Government jobs.
  2. 30% women reservation in the local bodies was made in the year 1997 which was later revised to 40% in 2008 and further enhanced to 50 % in the 2012 local bodies elections in Sikkim.
  3. In Sikkim, women enjoy full inheritance rights to parental properties. The Sikkim Succession Bill 2008, gives the girl child full right to inherit movable and immovable properties of her parents at par with male members.
  4. It is mandatory to mention mother’s name along with father’s in all government documents.
  5. Consent of both husband and wife is made mandatory for sale/ purchase of property.
  6. All incentives and benefits distributed by the Government are given in the name of the mother. Consent of wife made mandatory in case of withdrawal of Provident Fund of the husband.
  7. Under Universal Financial Inclusion programme, bank account in the name of the mother is to be opened and all benefits to the household are deposited in that account.
  8. Under the Chief Minister’s Self Employment Scheme, women are given interest free employment loan for two years.
