I concluded my 32 days ‘Jan Sampark Abhiyan’ by meeting and interacting with the people of Rangang-Yangang Constituency today at Lingmoo, South Sikkim.
In my address, I highlighted on the progress that the State has witnessed in all spheres in the last 24 years. Our pro-people and innovative policies have catapulted Sikkim as one of the best-performing states in the Country- a giant leap from being the poorest and the most backward state just more than two decades ago. Novel initiatives like the organic mission has brought us national and global recognition. Besides, the status of being the first fully organic state has opened up many opportunities for our youths to explore. Tourism is another sector that has flourished by leaps and bounds. Sikkim today is a sought-after tourist destination and the tourist footfalls to the State are ever increasing. As a result, employment opportunities in tourism and related activities have increased considerably, making it one of the most gainful employments for our people.
Another priority area of our Government is education. We have endeavoured to put in place all kinds of facilities for our students, with quality education being our target. With the objective of making education accessible to all, we have made education free for all till college level- a policy unheard of in any other part of the Nation. To add to this, we will be providing free education to our students in the upcoming State Medical College, Pharmacy College, National Law University as also free courses in ATTC Bardang and CCCT Chisopani.
Talking to the students, I advised them to avail the benefits and opportunities provided by the State Government. I stated that we want our youth to be highly educated, skilful and employable human resource. The State Government has fulfilled its duties by creating opportunities for them. The onus now lies on them to utilize these chances to their best advantage. They should work towards making our society the first knowledge-based society as opposed to caste-based society that we find everywhere in the Country. I also called upon the students to utilize their time constructively, to be disciplined in their daily life and give due regard to punctuality if they are to become successful individuals.
Speaking on the heath sector, I stated that we are one of the best performing states, with provision for quality heath care facilities for our people. The Multi Speciality Hospital that will be operational very soon would be a world class infrastructure for healthcare. Besides, Missions like TB-free Sikkim by 2022, free HPV vaccine for girls, free TB vaccine and the CATCH programme are all being implemented for making our people lead heathy and disease-free lives. I also informed the people on the recent decision of the Government to provide travelling allowance to patients referred outside the State- Rs 15000/- till Siliguri and Rs 25000/- for those referred beyond Siliguri.
Along with me, the entire State Government machinery travelled across the State during the ‘Abhiyan’, wherein we were able to get the first hand report of demands and grievances of the public. Though it was quite a taxing exercise, I am certain all will agree with me that it was a learning experience too. We now have a better idea of the hopes and aspirations of our rural people which are yet to be met. I tried my best to solve most of the problems on the spot. However, a lot remains to be done. I thank all those who accompanied me during the tour and I appeal to all the concerned departments and officials to take up developmental and public-related works on priority without any delay.
