I was pleased to attend the “Bhoomi Pujan” and foundation stone laying ceremony of Marwari Sarwajanik Seva Bhawan at old children park terrace today. I congratulate the entire Marwari community on the fulfilment of their long-pending demand.
One of the hallmarks of our governance has been providing peace, security and tranquil environment to the people of Sikkim. Though Sikkim is surrounded by three international boundaries, Sikkim is untouched by violence of any kind. This is primarily due to the good governance which we have provided to our people for last 24 years. This peace and tranquility has greatly helped to the growth and flourish of business establishments, particularly with the increase in the number of tourists visiting the state.
With the transformation MG Marg a place of great tourist attraction and Gangtok being known as the cleanest city, the value of anything associated with town has increased by leaps and bounds The metamorphosis of the bazaar from being just a mere stretch of taxi stand to the vibrant business hub that it is today, is for you all to see. This has been one of the biggest gifts to the business community from our Government. Business activities have flourished, and real estate value too has sky rocketed.
Our Government has always believed in inclusive development and we have done everything possible to bring the business community into the mainstream of Sikkimese society. Today the business community and Residential Certificate (RC) holders enjoy all the benefits of SSC holders in the urban areas. Secure and safe environment which our government has provided, is not enjoyed by businessmen in other parts of the country. Unlike days prior to our Government when businessmen and shopkeepers were under the frequent threat of extortion, today they are free to carry on their trade without any kind of interference or threat or blackmailing. 5% reservation in higher studies is granted to the students of the business community and the demand for the increase in this reservation will be looked into in the coming academic session.
I stated the fact that with democratic rights comes higher responsibilities. Therefore, our business community should be willing to take onerous responsibility to make Sikkim even better. I also urged them to support the organic mission and use the brand name of Sikkim as the first and the only organic state. I urged the businessmen not to sell any inorganic products and help to encourage our farmers to increase their production.
I announced that from the next financial year, the members of the business community can avail start up schemes . I also assured to look into all the demands placed before me during the function.
Earlier in the day, I laid the foundation stone of Social Housing for Economically Weaker Section at Sokaythang, Gangtok and Khangchendzonga Square Multilayered Car Park and Commercial Hub at old STNM complex, both under Gangtok Smart City Project.
